Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) Group is to participate in the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world’s largest consumer technology trade show, to be held in Las Vegas from January 5 to 8.
The Group is making its official debut at CES, operating an exhibition booth for the first time.
HHI Group plans to offer a glimpse into the future of shipping mobility with a focus on autonomous navigation at its first exhibition.

As for industrial equipment, one of its core businesses, the Group is to introduce a new product that combines artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technologies.

The Group will also unveil its future vision for energy, featuring its own eco-friendly technologies.
HHI Group’s first CES exhibition will feature: Avikus autonomous navigation system; robotics in industrial and daily technology; and offshore hydrogen value chain.

Avikus, inspired by the Old Norse word avviker which is believed to be the etymology of "Viking," is the name of HHI Group’s in-house venture established in December 2020 to develop autonomous navigation and operation solutions.

It became South Korea’s first company to successfully demonstrate fully autonomous navigation of a small cruise ship at the Pohang Canal in June 2021.

At the CES exhibition booth, Avikus will showcase a 6-meter-long self-sailing leisure boat model, with LED screens displaying moving images that will make it look like actually sailing in the ocean.

Visitors can board the boat and play a navigational simulation game featuring virtual reality (VR) technology.

“Autonomous navigation technologies will not only allow easier access to marine leisure activities, but also bring innovations to logistics and transform all aspects of marine development, from resource exploration and removal of pollutants to marine ecological survey,” said an HHI Group official. “Avikus aims to become the world’s first to conduct an autonomous navigation of a large merchant vessel in the ocean in early 2022.”

Hyundai Doosan Infracore and Hyundai Construction Equipment, for their part, will showcase industrial robots and remote-control technologies that can provide safe and effective solutions in the building process from surveys and operational planning to actual construction.

In particular, they will provide visitors with an opportunity to play an interactive game of building an eco-friendly marine city, which will help them easily understand the "robotization of industries."

As for Hyundai Robotics, it will display robots to be used for the “robotization of daily lives,” providing services ranging from food and beverages to disinfection.

The Group will also present its blueprint for an offshore hydrogen value chain at the show.

Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HHI, Hyundai Oilbank, and Hyundai Electric are each equipped with their own unique business structure and technological prowess related to green hydrogen, one of the most promising energy sources of the future. Their capabilities range from offshore production/storage and land transportation for sales as automotive fuel to conversion into electricity.

HHI Group will exhibit a 3.6-meter-high offshore wind generator and a next-generation hydrogen-powered ship model, while also providing a video presentation on its overall value chain, including green hydrogen production platforms, liquefied hydrogen terminals, and hydrogen stations.

“The Group’s key executives, including HHI Holdings’ CEO Chung Ki-sun, Hyundai Electric’s CEO Cho Seok, and Hyundai Doosan Infracore’s CEO Cho Young-chul, will attend the show,” said an official of the Group. “They all look forward to exploring the latest technology trends through exhibitions and seeking opportunities for cooperation with global leading companies.”
