HiMSEN engine, a medium-sized engine developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has entered India’s nuclear power plant market, stepping up HHI’s presence in the nuclear power market worldwide.
HHI announced on Tuesday that together with Hyundai Corporation, it recently signed in Mumbai, India, a contract worth USD 49 million (approx. KRW 57 billion) with Powerica, an Indian private power generation company, under which HHI will deliver emergency power generators.

The emergency generators will consist of 10 units of 6.3-megawatt model HiMSEN engine, to be supplied by 2022 to Units 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

This recent deal that HHI won on its own is particularly meaningful in that the client, in recognition of HHI’s excellent technological prowess, chose the Korean engine maker over the prominent European player dominating the global market.

Because emergency power generators are aimed to help maintain a reactor’s stability by supplying power to circulating water pumps and other equipment when the plant stops operating due to emergency situations, they must be able to load power within 15 seconds to prevent critical accidents such as nuclear reactor meltdown, which is why high levels of stability and quality are required.

HHI-developed emergency power generators are capable of providing power in a consistent manner even in the event of an earthquake with a magnitude of 8 or higher, boasting excellent stability and quality as evidenced by the fact that they passed all certification tests including aging, radiation and electromagnetic emission in line with the Korea Electric Power Industry Code (KEPIC).

Since 2010 when it was selected to supply engines to replace the aged emergency power generator for Kori Nuclear Power Unit 1, HHI has won so far orders for 39 emergency generators from domestic and foreign nuclear power plants, including those located in the UAE, UK and Pakistan, and has supplied 11 of them.

“Our reasonable expectation is that India alone will build 21 new nuclear power plants by 2031. The recent contract we won will serve as a stepping stone for us to proactively advance into the Indian market, which is emerging as one of the world’s top three nuclear power plant market along with China and Russia,” said an official at HHI.

Poised to make inroads into the overseas engine markets, HHI recently signed a contract with Saudi Arabia’s state-run oil company Aramco and an industrial investments company Dussur to set up a Saudi Arabian engine joint venture, under which a HiMSEN engine power plant with an annual capacity of 200 units will be constructed in the King Salman Global Maritime Industries Complex located in eastern Saudi Arabia by the end of 2021.
